What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet rich plasma treatment, often referred to as PRP, is a way to improve your ability to heal after having oral surgery. Treatment involves taking a small vial of your own blood and separating its content. The plasma is then extracted from the sample and placed over surgical sites to help in the healing process. Not only does PRP treatment help your body to heal naturally, but it can be helpful in preventing infections.

Why is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) needed?

PRP treatment is ideal for patients who are undergoing surgical procedures. It is a great way to improve your body’s ability to heal after an invasive procedure has been done. Likewise, PRP can help to prevent infections in and around the surgical site, which can eliminate the issues involved with post-surgical complications. Treatment uses your own blood plasma, which is safe and sterile.

Who is a candidate for Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Most patients are good candidates for PRP treatment. We will go over all health and medical history prior to recommending this treatment option. We often recommend PRP treatment to patients who are undergoing surgeries and any procedure where your body needs assistance in healing. The procedure involves taking a sample of blood using venipuncture methods, so this should be expected at the time of your appointment.

What happens during Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

The first step is to take a small sample of blood from your arm using venipuncture procedures. We then place the vial of blood into a high-speed centrifuge and spin it to separate the different elements inside. We then extract the plasma from the vial and put this aside for later use. We use the plasma over the surgical site so that it can benefit the healing and recovery process. We can utilize PRP treatment for any and all surgical procedures that you will undergo in our office.

What is Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)?

Our blood contains white blood cells, platelet-rich fibrin and many other elements that can help promote natural healing after surgical procedures. At Langdon Dental, we can perform a blood draw prior to any oral surgery and utilize the healing elements in the blood to promote quicker and more promising healing of the surgical site. The white blood cells found in the plasma can be used to fight infections.

Why would you need Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)?

Patients who are more prone to infection or have difficulty healing from oral surgery may require PRF treatment. However, PRF treatment is suitable for all patients of any age. The purpose of PRF treatment is to help in healing a surgical site within the mouth, preventing infection and improving the chances of the area healing fully and properly. The plasma can help in fighting infection as well as improving blood clotting of extraction and surgical sites.

What makes you a candidate for Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)?

Not everyone is a candidate for PRF treatment. First, you’ll need to have a consultation so that we can determine if you’re eligible for this treatment option. If you are a candidate, we will draw blood and place the vial into a centrifuge which separates the blood into varying elements. This plasma as well as the white blood cells and platelet-rich fibrin can be used after oral surgery.

What can be expected with Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)?

Prior to oral surgery, we can draw blood from you to be used to help in healing the surgical site. The blood is put into a centrifuge which separates the red blood cells from the plasma, white blood cells and fibrin. After surgery, we will carefully place these components on the area to promote quicker and more even healing. The purpose of PRF treatment is to help prevent infection after surgery as well as allow the area to clot and heal appropriately. The technology is entirely to the benefit of the patient and allows oral surgeries to be more successful.
