Sinus Lift/Ridge Augmentation
What is a Sinus Lift?
A sinus lift is a procedure that aims to lift the maxillary (upper) sinuses and place a bone graft between this area. It is most often needed if you have bone loss and are looking to have implants placed. The procedure is essential for patients who have moderate to severe bone loss, and who may not be able to have implants placed as a result of this.
Why would a Sinus Lift be needed?
The most common reason for needing a sinus lift is because you suffer from upper bone loss and want implants placed. Once the lift is done, a bone grafting is immediately performed, helping to add bone where it is missing. You may be suffering from bone loss because one or more teeth have been removed or because you have gum disease. Sinus lifts are relatively common procedures and can be done on patients of all ages.
Who is a good candidate for a Sinus Lift?
Most patients who need a sinus lift and are looking to have implants placed can and should consider a sinus lift. The procedure is a lot more simple than it sounds and can improve the success of implants being placed in these areas. We will perform an exam and take x-rays to determine if you have bone loss and if so, when you may need a sinus lift.
What happens during the Sinus Lift procedure?
We begin by administering a general anesthetic to make the procedure more comfortable for you. We then work to create an incision in the upper gums to gain access to the sinuses. The sinus cavity is lifted and a bone grafting material put into place. Once this is done, the gums are sutured and the grafting material is given time to heal. Once it is healed, we’ll go ahead and insert the dental implants into the freshly healed bone.
