DENTAL IMPLANTS

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a common way to replace missing or damaged teeth without having to damage neighboring teeth. A titanium post is carefully implanted into the jawbone to securely support a new tooth on top. Not only will these materials not decay like normal teeth, but your new tooth can seamlessly blend in with the rest of your teeth, making for a much more confident smile. For patients missing back teeth, implants are the only fixed option for restoring the bite close to natural dentition, avoiding the need of dentures.

1 – Preparation & Root Placement

Our patients have unique needs, for which reason an initial consultation is necessary. During this preparatory phase, a thorough examination is performed and a CT scan is taken to evaluate whether your jawbone is thick enough to support a dental implant. If it is, we proceed to tooth extraction (if necessary). If the jawbone is deficient, we perform bone grafting in order to improve the quality and quantity of bone support. In a bone grafting procedure we transplant supplemental bone into your jawbone. This process can delay the dental implants several months, or at least until the transplanted bone grows enough new bone to support a dental implant.

2 – Healing Process

This procedure of implanting a new, artificial root typically takes 1-2 hours. After surgery, your jawbone will require some time to heal, which can take several months, depending on the patient.

3 – Abutment Placement

When healing is complete, an abutment is attached. This piece will connect the metal root to the new crown that will eventually be placed on top. An additional 1-2 weeks of healing may be necessary.

4 – Crown Placement

When the dental implant has sufficiently healed, impressions of your mouth are taken for the new tooth that will be placed. This will ensure that the new ceramic tooth has the correct shape, color and size to seamlessly blend in. This process typically takes 2 visits 2 weeks apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Prices vary depending upon the amount and extent of procedures needed in order to successfully place the implant (bone grafting, ridge augmentation, sinus lift, gum grafting…). Other factors include the location of the tooth to be replaced by an implant and type of implant used. Beware of inferior quality implants and poorly trained non-board certified surgeons. Scheduling a consultation will assure full disclosure of all procedures and costs associated with the treatment. Some insurances cover a portion of the implant treatment.

It is normal to have some discomfort, as with any other dental procedure. However, it is our priority that patients have a comfortable experience. To this end we offer various levels of sedation to minimize the pain. Talk to us before the procedure so that we may address your concerns and unique needs. For any post-surgery discomfort, we may also prescribe pain medication.

No – That is the beauty about implants. You can treat your dental implant like any other tooth, with proper brushing, flossing and by avoiding damaging habits, like chewing on hard items. Please also continue to schedule your appointments for routine checkups.

Dental implants are not connected to any nerves, so it’s not often that a dental implant creates discomfort. However, if you do experience bleeding or swelling or simply feel that something may be wrong around the gum tissue, please make an appointment. It’s important that we diagnose the reason for an implant failure in order to provide an effective remedy. If we address the situation early enough, we can potentially reverse the failure and avoid the cost of corrective surgery.

A dental implant can last a lifetime if correctly implanted and maintained with brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups. Though it is important to also consider the location of the implant in the mouth. Implants in the back of the mouth receive more strain from chewing, which can cause failure more quickly than the front. The crown, however, can require more frequent replacement simply due to normal daily wear. Crowns are rated to last 10-15 years but can last even longer with excellent dental hygiene.

Customer Testimonials

“I’m on my fourth implant with Dr. Elbaz over a period of seven years and each one has been absolutely perfect. I wish Dr. Elbaz could be my doctor for everything. His conscientiousness and expertise is unparalleled. He is truly caring and ethical. I would trust Dr. Elbaz to place an implant with one hand tied behind his back before I trusted anyone else to touch my teeth- and I mean that most sincerely. His office and staff run as collected, friendly and efficiently as he, a clear reflection of his ethos, and the office is absolutely beautiful as well.” Dina B.

“I saw Dr. Elbaz for the removal of a failed dental implant. Dr. Elbaz and his staff are professional and very caring of their patients. The procedure required anesthetizing the area just under my nose (very painful place for needles) and I was not looking forward to it. For many years it has been difficult for dental anesthesia to work properly and causes extreme pain. I was astounded when he numbed the area and I did not feel anything… nothing. He took such care and had so much patience that for the first time in years, I walked out without having felt any pain. Thank you Dr. Elbaz!!” Stephanie F.
